Somehow I am always confusing Slavoj Žižek with Andrei Codrescu, but at least the latter is more or less confined to the bergerie of public radio, from which he can opine like some kind of eurotrash-cottonseed Garisson Keillor on the poetical necessity of his dogs eating squirrel turds, or whatever. Žižek, on the other hand, well shit, as Mister Smiff put it: "There's no getting away from the guy." Regular as a prune maker's bowel movements, he . . . appears . . . to crystallize in a nutshell the zeitgeist of the moment's worldview. He is like the party guest who scooped up more than his fair share of the coke and did a little scoot-to-toot off to the bathroom. He returns, eyes glassy, jaws twitching, ever-eager to involve you in a conversation that you neither want to have nor are able to escape. Each thunderous banality is announced with a flash of genealogical lightning. It's all, as Einstein said, relative. No really:
Repetition, according to Hegel, plays a crucial role in history.Personally I'd have given the shout out to Shirley Bassey. Honestly, this is like observing that flour is essential to bread but crediting the observation to Julia Child. Truism doesn't require citation, and pronouncing mere cliché as ex cathedra appears merely ridiculous. Red sky in the morning, according to the Chair of Peter, sailor's warning.
We are talking about the UK riots. Žižek displays that the main consolation of education is that it permits disapproval in the guise of didacticism; he, after all, hasn't got any skin in the game, or shop in the riots so to speak. Mister Smith says, "I've always felt -- ever since the Watts riots of the early 60s -- that the response to such events is a pons asinorum, an infallible indicator of one's fundamental outlook," and while that is finely turned, I think it overcredits our bourgeois interlocutors with having an outlook. Slavoj calls the rioters "worldless"--actually, he paraphrases his compeer Alain Badiou calling our "social space" "worldless"--these people slap neologisms like heavy smokers with a nic patch--and implies that the absence of a published agenda makes the rioters avatars of a "meaningless violence," but you can be fairly certain that even if the boys of Tottenham had airdropped a million copies of a bullet-pointed manifesto on the streets of London, Žižek would be in the pages of the LRB lamenting their dialectical inadequacies. I am sure that Slavoj believes himself to be very ideologically well endowed, but he is in fact exactly what he accuses the rioters of being: a mere aggregation of attitudes; he believes himself to be conducting an autopsy, but he is really just stealing watches.
"We live in cynical times," writes our philosopher--be grateful he doesn't offer a citation here as well. But is there anything more cynical than the insistence that outrage be tempered by pedantry? The world of capitalism which Žižek and Badiou and the rest of the frauds purport to oppose out of some abiding rump marxism has swallowed and digested them; read, in their tut-tutting, the regret, the jealousy of a failed novelist picking up a twenty-something's prizewinner. The universities and literary presses did not lead the proles into the street, ergo the proles had no purpose. He writes like a child who didn't get invited to the birthday party.

The Sun itself has bowel movements?
Mithra now is confused.
Now I am come Peristalsis, Maker of Prunes....
Having only barely passed the 5th grade, I've been completely baffled by Zizek for quite a few years. I can never understand what the hell's he talking about. It makes me feel like I'm being left out of something cool. Are you guys killing my dream?
Paul,
To understand Zizek, use this:
Zizek Syntax Generator
That's fantastic! Thanks Jack.
Paul,
You'll probably like the Postmodern Generator, then.
Yo - to the anonyous whose comment I deleted. You were right. What you did was wrong. If that bonehead wants to come over here and be a bonehead, he can; or fuck it, post a hyperlink, fred.
If you want to see Zizek on coke, follow this link to a talk he gave to the good people at Google.
All the signs are there: the non-stop sniffing, the compulsive rubbing of the nose, the incoherent, grandiose, rapid-fire delivery.
I wish I had some of what he had.

Zizek's prose is practically unreadable, and he says nothing. It's amazing anyone bothers.
He's guilty of the standard problem of intellectuals: overthinking. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. And sometimes rioters are just uncivilized brutes, hitting people because it's fun to assert dominance, stealing stuff because it is valuable, and setting fires for the joy of destruction.
Lol@3:33 - Holyshit Slavoj is tooted up LIKEWHOA!
I once interviewed for a corporate job with a company that had a sort of techfirm-lite package of employee perks. So they're touring me around--here's the gym; here's the locker room; here's the auditorium where we have really great and interesting speakers--and I was like, WAITAMINUTE THESE AREN'T PERKS THIS IS FUCKING HIGHSCHOOL!
He's guilty of the standard problem of intellectuals: overthinking.
No, he's guilty of the standard problem of public intellectuals: being a cravenly dishonest c***s***er. He's Thomas Friedman with a thesaurus.
Alright, that was too harsh, he's not nearly as awful as Friedman, Zizek's closer to Ezra Klein really.
Yea IOZ I let the googlers give me the tour out of curiosity, and went running away as fast I could. The worst part is that the kids actually enjoy the free kool-aid they are provided in convenient snack bars located throughout.
Didn't bother to read Zizek, but I've heard it argued that the happenings in London are not largely a matter of outrage but opportunism. Finding a person on the street with a busted nose and helping him up so your pal can loot his backpack, why that is the mark of a stinking capitalist!
i love listening to & reading zizek but i really have little sympathy for his politics. perhaps i like him the same way i like watching david lynch movies - it doesn't have to "make sense" in some serious/conventional way to provoke enjoyment, inspiration, insight, laughter, & meaning. the guy's project is to turn stinky old western philosophy on its head by re-reading philosophers through the lens of psychoanalysis. it's sorta funny that he's perceived as a big leftist voice or something these days. i think he's more of a post-modern abstract language artist.
His chiding is a poor mask for envy
...the guy's project is to turn stinky old western philosophy on its head by re-reading philosophers through the lens of psychoanalysis.
In much the same fashion, tonight, I turned a pair of muggers on their heads by confronting them with a flaccid hotdog.
I liked Zizek's post about the ideology of cynicism, as it left me feeling vindicated for views I already had, and exposed me to some of Sloterdijk's views (I don't read German).
Other than that, I've seen him bash gypsies, hail 300 (the movie) as great education for the Left regarding discipline, and giggle like a school girl when asked about his rumoured relationship with Lady Gaga (a media hoax by an English radical left groupuscule).
the vampire state building is crumbling
the guy's project is to turn stinky old western philosophy on its head...
A. Zizek has a project beyond plagiarism?
B. What's so stinky about old western philosophy?
GOLDFINGER, dundadadundundun... If you really want to hate a "philosopher" read his oratorio to Israeli anarchos et al in Tel Aviv about a month ago. He opines that it is indeed "antisemitism" that plagues mankind. The audience was left wanting as they didnt expect someone from The American Enterprise Institute, European Division I dont think. He also doesn't seem to care for Gypsies much. Im the worlds laziest internet prescence so I dont post links. But if you care to read it was over at. Josef Ibn Ezra's J14 I think its called.
That would be +972 blog. Funny and appropriate alphanumeric slip of the tongue.
i figuratively rolled on the floor laughing
You mentioned Shirley Bassey. Coincidentally enough, like our president, she had one white parent and one black African parent.
since giving up NPR, i haven't heard Andrei Codriescu. instead, at the all-news, traffic and weather station, i hear ads for cars, replacement windows, diamonds, Jiffy Lube, etc....who knows if it's good or bad?
Garsh, it sure is good to have you back, monsieur.
Anon3:33 zzzilched! Nice find. He reminds me of a squirrel I once knew.
Off topic, but I have to offer this:

I started wondering if Monsieur could be Indian. I really don't see how the material in the second half could be improved, even in his capable hands.
"through psychoanalysis"
or in the parlance of our times "through bullshit artistry"
i'm confused. what exactly are we objecting to?
Zizek was cool for a minute in the late eighties, going Lacan on Hitchcock: the petit 'a'! But he was all asbergers when I saw him lecture at Cornell in '89, and he hasn't gotten any better (even after discovering cocaine, apparently) He ran for President of Slovenia, I was in a cult with some Slovenes who lived in his apartment building in Ljubiana, and I gots to visit it!
